5Wonderful Cleaner
By Cheryl RN
Ordered this steam cleaner shortly after I got my 12 week old puppy who is in the process of being pottytrained. I have used it on my carpet to get puppy stains.odors out and they disappeared immediately! Now I find myself cleaning everything in sight and I do not know how I ever lived without this cleaner. My house smells fresh without the use of chemicals and it has taken in some instances 21 years worth of grime off in a matter of seconds!! Try it and see for yourself.

5Love It!
By Heidi A. Mcgowan
I bought a Fogacci Topline around 2006. It worked great for about a year and a half then it quit working. After that, every time I turned around it was in the shop for repairs. The repairs were never cheap, always around $80. The last time the machine was basically rebuilt which cost about $225 and several visits, under a year quit working again. I decided I had put enough money into this machine and decided to try GO E20 Home Steam Cleaner. Although the machine is only a month old the things that are better about this machine than the Fogacci are 1. it heats faster 2. rolls better with the larger wheels 3. electrical cord doesn't get tangled in the machine as easily when pulling 4. the way the hose attaches to the machine it doesn't pull out like it did on the Fogacci 5. the warranty is longer 5 years versus 2 years (for the time I bought mine. The only con is you need to order some of the extra attachments like a brass nozzle to clean your grill, but frankly with all the pluses I can deal with that. It is a lot of money for a machine but I clean my own grout with this machine and it looks brand new after being in my house for 12 years. My understanding it cost over a thousand to get it professionally done.

5Simply Awesome
By James
I'm one of those weird people that likes to clean floors and I've been on a mission my entire adult life looking for the best cleaning products. Although not perfect, this is the best I've found so far. Before purchasing the Enviromate, I also rented a Lady Bug. Here are my likes/dislikes.

Pluses
* Amazing deep clean. What the these vapor cleaners do to grout is spectacular.
* Versatile. Not just floors, but bathrooms, and even our pool tile.
* Goes a long time on one tank. You can only handle so much use/cleaning and I've found that the Enviromate goes long enough to warrant a break. The Lady Bug I rented had the option to fill without depressurizing, which this one does not. I was concerned and almost went with the higher model, but I'm glad I didn't. It does not take long to de-pressure/refill and the Lady Bug required filling more often (had a smaller tank).
* Great attachments. What is provided is all that's required for normal household cleaning.
* The cloth grips on the attachment are great. I found them to hold better than the Lady Bug.
* Quality build. Overall, similar build quality to the Lady Bug, but the hose has a much higher quality feel to it.

Minuses
* I wish the cord was a tad bit longer and had a better way to store it (I don't find it wraps very well).
* I wish it came with one more extension. I'm 6' and the max length of the wand is borderline uncomfortable. The higher model does come with the extension, I believe.

5Fantastic product! Great job on carpet, pleasantly surprised on tile.
By AggieMom
I have previously used the Bissell 9400 ProHeat 2X Select Upright Deep Carpet Cleaner to clean the inevitable stains associated with cats and potty training little boys from my Berber carpet. A friend has that cleaner, so I borrowed it on several occasions before finally deciding to get one of my own. Just before I was ready to buy, Good Housekeeping ran a review on the Hoover SteamVac so I looked it up on Amazon. I read the reviews and decided to take my chances with it.

I am amazed at the difference in the two machines. The Bissell used to shear off fibers from the carpet and leave a nasty trail of what looks like hairballs behind as I worked. The clean and dirty tanks are in the same unit which is clever, but almost impossible to clean.

The Hoover has two tanks - one for clean hot water with a compartment for the cleaning solution, and one for the dirty water. Both water tanks hold a gallon. I had no problems loading the clean tank or removing the dirty tank. No dripping of dirty water, no puddles on the rug or the kitchen floor when changing tanks.

Like I said before, I've cleaned my entire house several times with the Bissell machine, but I was amazed at the almost muddy water that came out of the carpet. It was as if I'd never cleaned the floors before. The dirty tank is easy to rinse out and reattach. The trick is to "recline" the machine so the clean tank is laying on the ground attached to the handle. Unsnap the clips and the dirty tank comes right off with no problem at all. Clean it out, snap the lid back on and clip it back into place and then you can stand the handle back up and deal with the clean tank.

The suction on this machine is amazing. It used to take hours and hours for the carpet to dry when I used the Bissell. I'd have to turn the fans on high and let them go overnight to have dry carpets in the morning. Two hours after cleaning the carpet (2 cleaning/rinse passes plus a rinsing only pass) and the floors were nearly dry.

I tested the Hoover on my kitchen tile. I hate ceramic tile. I will never have it in another house, but I'm stuck with it for now. I usually use the Vapor Clean II steam/pressure cleaner on the tile, but decided to give the Hoover a try since it came with the cleaning solution for the job. I wouldn't want to use it every time I clean the kitchen floor, but for a quick cleaning before company comes it'll do the trick. Again, I did not have any puddle problems. If you release the trigger just before you finish your pull stroke you won't have any puddling to speak of. The Hoover does a great job sucking up the water on the tile and even gets the water from the grout. It doesn't do a great job on grout because that's not what it's designed to do. I'll stick to my VaporClean and the special brush I have for that.

I'm also happy with the amount of cleaner used. The Bissell goes through cleaning solution at a much faster rate than the Hoover does. I like that, since leaving soap on the fibers is just going to make the floor get dirty faster.

The only things I'm not thrilled with:

The cleaning solution dispenser is integrated with the clean water tank. I wish it came with a spout or something attached so that pouring out leftover solution wasn't so messy. I know I could leave the solution in there between uses, but I have already had to pour out leftover carpet solution to switch to the hard surface cleaner - then I had to put the hard surface cleaner back in the bottle to switch back for more carpet work. Some sort of retractable spout or a reversable plug with a spout attached would be great.

The hose attachment is kind of flimsy. I've had the whole hose assembly fall off several times as I was changing tanks. It's not a huge deal, but it's annoying to the point that I'm considering taking that part off and storing it separately until I need to use the hand tools.

Buy this cleaner - you won't be disappointed!

UPDATE: January 2011

I still love this machine. I don't consider the drips that come from laying the handle down to be a problem. It's how the unit was designed. It's certainly not a return-worthy concern. I am capable of placing a towel on the floor to wipe up the drips from that, and it's never more than a few drips. And it's clean water, so who cares?

It still works great for me with no problems at all since I got it in 2007. I quit buying the detergent that goes with it and only use vinegar in the detergent tank now with no problems.

As far as the performance on carpet, it's still great. I shampooed the white carpet at my grandparents' house recently and they were mortified by how much black water came out of the machine. They've had their home professionally shampooed within the last year, too. Their carpet came clean and looked fantastic when I left.

I haven't used it on my carpet upstairs lately because I don't allow food up there, so there's not much need for more than regular vacuuming. I do use this machine more frequently on my kitchen tile than I thought I would, and I'm still happy with it. It gets the job done quickly, and the floor is dry when I'm done. It's loud, but not so loud that I don't want to use it.

Maybe they've changed things with the model since 2007, but my unit is still going strong. There may be better tools for the job out there, but until this one breaks I'm happy with what I've got. I'm not crazy, just satisfied. I'm not sure why that's so difficult to believe.

5Works Great!
By Mother of four
So i've been looking for a steam cleaner for over a week, reading reviews on any steam cleaner that has a review to try to choose one that will work for my family. With all the negative feedback on the Hoover I was disappointed and thought about changing brands. I had a hoover spin scrub and it has worked wonderfully for over 5yrs but with bringing up and down the stairs and my son letting it pound on the stairs the front plate broke off. Although i could get it repaired, honestly i felt it was a good excuse to get myself a new one and chose to give my old one to charity.

Of all the reviews i have read, the one that i felt had any true meaningful information was a gentleman that was an engineer that said that the plastic on the tank was too brittle. Armed with this information, i did go to my local Hoover store to see what they had in stock. I was ready to purchase another spinscub or to have mine repaired.

I purchased the All-terrain steamvac after talking to the rep. She did not dispute that the tanks plastic is more brittle and should be able to withstand a little more abuse, however, she also said that all of the people that have come into the store to have the tanks replaced, have abused it in some way. The plastic is not made for EXTREMELY hot water, so if your tap water is extremely hot, then fill the tank with some cooler water. the hotter temp. will crack the tank. She said her hot water heater is set so high that when you run only hot water it is too hot to touch. and she mixes her water with cold to get the temp. right. The other scenerio she explained is people dropping the tank when it is full of water. In all the years i can't remember ever dropping the tank so i wasn't concerned about that. And the last scenerio she explained that one woman had her teenager using the machine and had shoved the tank into place and it cracked somehow.

i tried replacing the tank myself in the store and it seemed pretty simple. so i bought it.

i have only had it for a few days but have already cleaned with it. and i love it.something must be wrong with the other reviewer's machine because i filled mine with 16oz. of cleaner and have cleaned my formal living room, formal dining, family room, guest room, stairs and basement , probably close to 1500sq. ft. and still have over half of the solution in it.

The new design is much better than the spinscrub. The hose for the hand attachments attaches in the front so it won't crack at the base like in the older models. I like that the cleaning solution is in a separate container so when you run out of clean water or the clean water gets cold, you can just refill the water side without having to waste cleaning solution or needing to measure out solution every time you need to fill the tank.

The rinse button is nice when you've sprayed down a stain in the carpet and it gets too soapy, then just flip the button and it only dispenses water.

The people I talked to at the hoover store say that most of the repairs with the valves involve the solution that is used. Oxy-clean eats at the rubber and then they don't seal properly. Never put oxy-clean into the tank. It is fine to use the spray oxy on the carpet but not the powder stuff.

i have to say that it cleans great. My dog barfed some green stuff on my carpet a week ago and since i haven't had anything to clean it up with, it has just sat in the carpet. Well the stain is gone and it sat in the carpet for a week!

The dirty water tank is always coming up with dirt and stuff. The dirt stains in my carpet from my dogs/kids are gone and the carpet looks great. I am very happy with it. I will buy the extended 3yr warrenty on the machine. For 50bucks it will protect my investment in case i change my mind about it in a few months!

But I recommend for anyone go to your local shop. I read a lot of the reviews with women bitching about the tank not fitting into the bathroom sink or the cord not being long enough. Personally, I don't want a small tank that fits in my sink. I have too much carpet to clean and the smaller the tank, the more I have to refill it. We've all had those days when nothing is going our way. Just relax. Get a grip! It's just a steam cleaner and our country is at war!!! Hope this was helpful!

2Good....at first
By P. Jensen
We purchased the All Terrain about six months ago. The instructions are very well written and assembly was easy. I fired it up for the first time and it cleaned the carpets beautifully. I thought we had a real winner. After that initial use the problems began to creep up. Starting with the second use, the clean water tank began leaking around the seal at a fairly significant rate. I probably should have returned the unit, but I didn't, and now regret it because it is now totally out of commission. The brushes are connected to the unit via a drive shaft that is less than 1/4" thick plastic. On our cleaner this shaft sheered off and is stuck in the unit. Only at this point did I do any serious research about the All Terrain on the Internet and realized that these two issues are very common with these units and apparently dealing with Hoover for repair can be a nightmare. Caveat Emptor

4Minor Issues, But Better Than Others
By mommacass
Bissell 14005 Little Green verses Hoover F5411 Steamvac Jr.

I've used both of these mini shampooers and was not entirely satisfied with either, but I preferred the Bissell's Little Green over Hoover's Steamvac Jr. and here's why:

I first had the Little Green for about five years. It was a great little vac with only minor problems. The fill and empty containers are removable from the unit for convenient filling and emptying. There is a cord winder built onto the unit, the hose wraps conveniently around the unit and locks into place, and the shape and size are convenient for most applications including stairs and storage.

The problems I had with the Little Green:
- It would occasionally leak a bit. The water seemed to be coming from where the hose connects to the base. It was a small drip leak that was easily solved by emptying the clean water tank after each use. We used ours so frequently that I sometimes left clean water in the tank during storage to avoid wasting cleaning solution.
- My biggest problem with the Little Green was the inability to completely clean the dirty water tank. I had four cats when I first bought the Little Green and eventually had four kids. The Little Green made it through a number of illnesses with us above and beyond pet accidents. The dirty water tank became filthy and unsanitary and was not designed to be dismantled for thorough cleaning. Eventually, the smell became too great and I had to dispose of the tank. I decided it was time to try a new spot shampooer - one that had a cleanable tank.

That's when I decided to try the Hoover Steamvac Jr. Both the Little Green and the Hoover spray and suck reasonably well for a small machine. As far as actual cleaning quality, the two are comparable. However, I found the Hoover to be bulky and a pain and its only redeeming quality, in my opinion, was that I am able to thoroughly clean the dirty water tank.

The problems I had with the Hoover F5411 Steamvac Jr.:
- The tanks are the base of the unit and are not removable. In order to fill the clean water tank, you have to either maneuver the entire unit under the faucet and aim at a one inch hole in the portion of the unit that houses the motor, or you have to dismantle the machine and still maneuver the largest part of it under your faucet or use a bucket.
- The tanks are a single bucket-style unit separated by a divider. They are not individual parts. When you dump the dirty water, if you have the unit fully assembled, the clean water will slosh around. If you dismantle the machine to empty it, you will also be emptying the clean water tank.
- The top portion that houses the motor also has a filter that sits down in the dirty water tank, so if you dismantle the machine to fill or empty it, you are forced to place the motor housing with hose and cord in a tub or sink or get your floor dirty and wet.
- The machine is round. It doesn't fit well on stairs nor is it a convenient shape to store.
- There is no cord storage on this unit and no convenient way to store the cord or keep it out of your way when you are filling, emptying, or storing. You can wrap it around the base of the handle, but it usually does not stay in place if you empty the tank and tends to get in the way of using the handle to carry the machine.
- The Steamvac Jr. does have a spot to store the hose, but I find it an inconvenient and cumbersome position.

I'm currently saving my pennies to buy another Little Green. The little Hoover just makes me more angry than satisfied and I've taken to simply letting stains set in instead of hassle with the obnoxious machine.

I would recommend avoiding the Proheat Little Green. It seems the parts are not designed to work well with the heat and tend to break down. Hot tap water in the standard Little Green works well and this is coming from a germaphobe whose hands are raw from overwashing. If it's clean enough for me, it's probably more than clean enough for you. If you're looking for a spot shampooer, the Little Green is your best bet.

5I'm a pro, and say it's great.
By Steve
I've owned a cleaning business for 26 years, and this machine is great. There are a few secrets to success with it:

To clean it and keep it from smelling, flush it after using. Suck hot clean water through the hose. If your unit is really dirty, suck a mild bleach solution and let it sit. ALSO, remove the rubber gasket at the bottom of the waste tank and clean it... this can be a major source of odor. It's very easy to do, but not mentioned in the instructions.

Use just clean water in the solution tank, and put the cleaner in a spray bottle. (The less soap the better. Use the scrubber on the nozzle and allow a few minutes of dwell time). Think of your machine as the rinse cycle in a clothes washing machine. Rinse the dirt and soap out, leaving a minumum of residue. A seperate bottle also allows more precise application of cleaner. And it extends tank refills, so you won't have to wait for the spray pump to reprime as much.

Durablility? I've used mine several times a week for almost a year now, what with business, dogs, and small children. No sign of wear whatever.

This is a brilliant design. Don't let the reviews that don't know how to work with it dissuade you. It is one of the finest, best engineered consumer appliances ever made. Get the least expensive model, as the Turbo Brush and heater don't work well and are not needed.

Drawbacks? Okay, it doesn't have the suction power of a commercial machine. If you want that, pay three hundred dollars more and lug an extra thirty pounds around the house.

1Negatives outweigh the positives
By Rebeca Mead
I bought the Little Green the day after we adopted a puppy. Although it does a sufficient job suctioning accidents out of carpeting, I would not recommend it.

Positives:

--Good at absorbing spills or other liquids from carpeting

--Compact and easy to store

Negatives:

--Dirty water pools in the bottom of the unit under the tank that collects the dirty water.

--The unit then leaks the dirty water out the bottom while using it.

--It is extremely difficult to clean.

--The dirty water never seems to be fully emptied even after taking the entire unit and dumping it upside down.

--It smells horrible! Even emptying it immediately after every use has not prevented it from smelling awful while using the machine. I think this is because the dirty water is never fully emptied. Hot, soapy water suctioned up after a clean up has not helped to remove the lingering smell.

4Beats anything under this price range
By Michael Bremer
About me: I have had a few cats over the years and recently one of them who has now passed away was over 19 years old, had kidney disease and started urinating anywhere an everywhere throughout the home where she pleased. Also, I have a mobile automotive detailing business which I also use this unit for.

First, let me start out by saying I've been through two non commercial use Hoover carpet cleaners and one bissel. On the bissel, the Jose broke on the second use and leaked everywhere. (the hoses were really stiff), it was a waste of 180.00. I returned it and turned to Hoover, the first of the two was a max extract model, after a couple of uses it got stuck in the spray position, soaking my carpeting beyond belief and I had to go over the entire carpet with my wet/dry shop vac. I returned it for a lesser expensive model Hoover and it did the same thing in my bedroom. I returned it and vowed to myself never to buy a Hoover or bissel again.

Finally, I purchased this unit. I have used it in my living room, bedroom, stairs, and it has even now become my primary automotive shamooer/extractor. Both the unit and upholstery tool feel much more commercial grade than any of the other units I've had. It's made of plastic but a much more durable plastic than the other machines I've owned. It has excellent suction when compared to the other units. Therefore, it leaves much less dampness on the cleaned surfaces thus promoting a faster dry time then comparable extractors. I even went over some carpeting that I could still smell cat urine on after cleaning it twice before with the Hoover machines and I couldn't believe how well it performed and how much junk it removed.

As far as cleaning solution is concerned, I always use either folex brand carpet cleaner or zep commercial low foaming solution in the gallon containers. They work better than the small/high cost bottles (they are sold by the gallon at home depot or here on amazon). You do not have to use the manufacturers brand but I would suggest low foaming. All the manufacturer is trying to do in my opinion is bully you into their product so they receive more profit. Like they'll know anyway. The folex has no odor therefor doesn't leave behind that strong irritating "wow, the carpets were just cleaned, Odor".

I would recommend following up any cleaning with taking the machine over it once more with just plain hot water to remove any extra soap residue. Thats what a good professional would do anyway. Soap attracts dirt, try to remove as much of it as possible. I don't understand the water only solution PRIOR to soaping... Just sounds like more work and a wetter floor to me.

Hope this helps you all out... For the durability and improved performance alone it is well worth the extra price to pay. The only cons are as followed:

No water heater
It is a little on the tipsy top heavy side but nothing severe.

5A pleasant surprise for a 4 dog family
By Cathie
We have 4 large dogs and a large wooded back yard, needless to say our carpets can look hideous at times. Having someone come in to do clean our carpets is just not workable, it would create to much chaos. We had a standard Hoover Steam cleaner for years, but it was a loosing battle. This is the type of job that requires a tough machine, so we decided to bite the bullet and go big and get the Rug Doctor.

I can't say how surprised we were from the very first cleaning line we did....we felt like we were in the commercial, it worked wonders! What used to take me an entire day to clean took me only 2 1/2 hours and it left no more of a damp footprint than our Hover did.

The machine itself is basic, no more now less - no fancy bells or whistles, but for a serious job this is the machine for us. The only downside is it doesn't come with the hose for tight corners that's extra - of course.

5Great appliance, comparable to commercial grade products
By Phuong Hoang
PROS:
-Powerful, fight stains with easy. (deep-down stains may requires some hand scrub)
-Huge, 3 gallon tank, with super long power cord. Move from room to room with no problem.
-Priceless if having pets.
-5 year warranty, will beat any cheap oreck or hoover.

CONS:
- It consume water quickly if you move slowly (my carpet was so dirty).
- It's kind of pricey but I knew the cost would pay for its self in no time compare to rental savings.
Besides that, can't find any negatives to this carpet steamer.

4Hoover MaxExtract 60 PressurePro Carpet Deep Cleaner, FH50220
By Don
After adopting two basset hounds, I decided to invest in a carpet cleaner of some sort. I spent a couple of days reviewing products in the [...] range. I spent a good bit of time at Target, Walmart, Lowes and Home Depot literally taking various floor models apart and putting them back together to inspect their quality and ease of use.

I learned that more people were satisfied with Hoover products than Bissell. I could see how the little spinning brushes on Hoover products should clean more thoroughly than Bissell's one long beater brush. Reviews seem to bear this out, but it's close! I narrowed my choices down to the Hoover All Terrain Steam Vac Hoover SteamVac Carpet Cleaner, All-Terrain, F7452900 or the Bissell ProHeat 2X Home Bissell ProHeat 2X Healthy Home Upright Deep Cleaner, 66Q4. The Bissell appeared a better built product, but I didn't really like the bar brush or the odd bladder style tank-in-a-tank.

That's when I just happened to stop by a Target store and found this machine, Hoover MaxExtract 60 PressurePro Carpet Deep Cleaner, FH50220. It has the little brushes I like and the quality is FAR SUPERIOR to the Hoovers in the "Steam Vac" series. (I just can't believe how flimsy they are.) The Hoover Max Extract is a much more solid machine than any of the Bissells I looked at.

I used it for the first time today and cleaned the entire house. Very nice! I would have to say that the Hoover Max Extract 60 does every bit of a good job as any professional cleaning I've had. Matter of fact, it did a better job than the last professional as he seemed in a hurry. The carpets took about 2 hours to dry. The real surprise comes when you vacuum the carpet after it has dried. Wow, my eight year old, dog worn carpet looks new again!

For the record, I used about 64 oz.of Hoover Pet detergent Hoover 40321130 Premium Pet Formula Carpet/Upholstery Detergent, 128-Ounce over about 1500 sq. ft. of carpet. The trick, it seems, is to go slow and make sure all of the dirty water is sucked up. It did a great job of the water extraction. The worst areas (where the dogs lie) I simply used a little extra spray and let the little brushes do the work.

Cleaning the machine is fairly easy and straight forward. It took me about 30 minutes to clean the machine and get it ready for next time. The only problem I had with it (reason for 4 stars, not 5) was that the brushes did not spin the very first time I used them. I simply reached down and loosened them up by popping them out as if to clean them. They worked flawlessly after that!

I am very pleased with the quality and sturdiness of the Max Extract 60 and thrilled with the way it cleaned my carpets. I would highly recommend it to a friend.

5I vacuum! Honest!
By WontPontificate
Two days ago, I acquired this Hoover MaxExtract 60 carpet cleaner. I purchased it with some degree of skepticism, since my experience with shampooers has been...shall we say...less than ideal. Too many experiences with shoddy construction, poor suction, messy dirty-water tanksand brief lifespan. The last time I'd used a home model was about ten years ago, and when it died, I swore off buying dodgy plastic consumer rubbish ever again!

A couple of weeks ago, I realized that the last time I'd cleaned my carpet was the 4th of July 2009, the weekend I proudly moved in to my new (to me!) home! I marched into the grocery store, rented one of the big red carpet cleaners, and spent a busy day industriously shampooing all of my new carpets. I returned the machine the next day, satisfied at my shampoo job, and started moving in.

Since that day, I've made any excuse to avoid going and renting the blasted thing again. Too many time constraints! I don't have a free day to do it all! It's just throwing money down the hole! It's all very easy to talk yourself out of getting up off of the sofa and doing something that requires effort, until something forces your hand. In my case, the tipping point was dog puke!

My housemate and I have a dog with a very sensitive stomach. Last week, she got into something that didn't at all agree with her, and sold her Buick all over my living room carpet. As my luck goes, she didn't hold still, but sauntered around, and left a lovely trail of evil-smelling puddles of sick and grass to deal with. Once it was discovered, my housemate attempted to clean it up by hand, but her efforts were rewarded with a stronger smell, and a wet carpet. I decided then and there that it was time to rent a big red machine, or leave my prejudices behind, and look at the consumer units again.

I started researching, looking at amazon reviews and youtube videos for everything from little spot cleaners all the way up to the enormous commercial machines. I found that this MaxExtract 60 was about the "sweet spot" -- the point a level or two above the awful to operate "cheap and cheerful" machines, and a level below where the law of diminishing returns kicks in. Pre-purchase, I was attracted by the twin tank design, the automatic mixing of detergent and water, the rinse option, the automatic switch to hand tool mode, and the pour spout on the dirty water tank. I was skeptical about the dual V nozzle, the pressurized shampoo sprays, and the hot air blast, but I figured I'd give it a chance.

I discovered a couple of nearby retailers had this model on display, so I went and had a look at it. I was impressed by how far you can disassemble this machine for cleaning without tools. Both tanks are (obviously) removable, as is the front vacuum nozzle, brush bar, and even the spray bar, all without any tools. In addition to the pour spout, the dirty water tank is equipped with a latch that allows the entire top to pop off for easy cleaning. I was quite thoroughly impressed by this attention to detail, given my last experience with an impossible-to-clean unit I had, that just wound up smelling absolutely awful after a couple of uses.

I decided that in light of these new features, i'd give the machine a try. I purchased it from another retailer, on the spot (Hey, Instant Gratification!) and took it home with me.

Assembly was dead easy, remove a screw from the top of the machine (it has a card attached to it tell you what to do,) press the handle into place, and then replace the screw. From there, all you have to do is wrap the hose, and the cord, and your machine is ready to go! I was rather shocked at this ease of assembly, that I read through the entire manual twice to make sure that I hadn't missed any steps. Satisfied that I hadn't, I filled the detergent tank to the "concentrate" line with the included Hoover detergent, and then topped the detergent tank with water, and completely filled the regular water tank. I quickly moved the furniture out of the way, vacuumed the floor, and let fly with this brand new Hoover Suck-o-Luxe!

The Hoover MaxExtract 60 disgusted me.

Completely and utterly. I can't even begin to fathom how horrified I was.

Made me wish I'd never bought it.

So, now, you're probably thinking, "WHY DID THE DOOFUS RATE IT FIVE STARS THEN?" -- well, I'll clarify. I wasn't dissatisfied with the cleaner itself. Not at all! The Hoover MaxExtract 60 exceeded my expectations, performing admirably. What horrified me was the chocolate milkshake I poured out of my first tank of dirty water!

I like to think I'm a clean person. I vacuum weekly with a fairly high quality vacuum, I dust regularly, and generally keep things shipshape and bristol fashion. After that first tank of dirt, I disassembled the machine, taking out all of the user serviceable parts to make sure there was no black magic going on! I satisfied myself with the cleaning path, refilled my water tank, and tried again. Same result! Clean water sprayed down, disgusting, thick, chocolate milkshake comes up. I swapped over to rinse cycle, and ran over the carpet again, and the water was even dirtier! Shock! Horror! all that dust and dirt really sinks into what I thought was clean carpet.

Tank after tank of dirty water later, and my dining and loungeroom were done! After all that, my impression still remains positive of this unit, my fear of consumer carpet cleaners, has, for the moment, been vanquished!

Observations so far:

-The pressurized water spray really gets the solution down into the carpet. The previous machine I had just sort of dribbled the solution weakly, and it sat on the surface, not penetrating at all.
-The rotating "spinscrub" brushes really fluff the carpet up, making even my high traffic ares soft and fluffy again. They also seem to do a fantastic job of just scrubbing the dirt out of the carpet as well.
-I still can't comment as to whether the "dual V" nozzle is any more or less efficient than a single nozzle, but I have to say that this machine could suck the chrome off a doorknob. Walking behind the machine, the carpet is barely damp, and the room was dry in a couple hours, after several slow passes of the machine. (I used the manual-recommended push forward, then pull back while spraying, and then push forward and pull back dry before moving on to the next strip.)
-The easy pour spout is amazing. My previous cleaner had a lid that you removed to pour out the sludge, which always dribbled down the side, getting you covered with filth or dripping it all over wherever you emptied. Not so here, the spout works a treat!
-The dirty water container still has nooks and crannies, but is the easiest to clean I've ever seen. Pop the entire top of it off and swish it out. Sand still gets trapped in the recesses of the thing, but I found that by holding it vertically and blasting it out with my sink's hose-nozzle-thing, I could get it mostly cleaned. The hard plastic construction of it is better than the soft plastic of other machines I've used, as it rinses clean much better.
-Cleaning the machine is dead simple. Take off the dirty water tank, pop off the vacuum nozzle, and pop out the brushes and take the lot to the sink. Run water through the nozzle and suction path backwards to rinse any hair and crud out, and you're done! The brushes come completely apart, allowing you to clean them individually.
-The hot-air blast, in conjunction with the excellent suction leaves the carpet drier than any other machine I've used. It's not 100% bone dry, and I wouldn't expect it to be, but it's certainly not sopping wet. I'm not sure how the "hot air blast" works, but I think it just runs the hot air from the motor exhaust back right behind the brush bar, and down into the carpet. I think whether its hot or not, it fluffs up the fibers, making it easier for the vacuum part to suck the crud out of your carpets.
-The machine is very, very thirsty. I find myself going through a full tank of water in less than 100sqft. I don't think this is a bad thing, since emptying it gives me an excuse to slack off for a few minutes, and I think the more water used, the more dirt it can pick up, but some folks seem to find this a concern. Using more water freaks a lot of folks out about carpet cleaners, since it means longer dry times, but as I've said, this thing sucks out more of what it puts down than pretty much any other machine I've used, including the big red one, so its little worry.
-Hair gets itself lodged up in the individual tufts of the brushes, making it impossible to get out, but I don't think thats a huge problem. The brushes seem to continue to function just fine.

I came into this machine with a healthy dose of skepticism, having been burned too many times in the past. I did my share of research before buying these, considering Bissel, Hoover, and a Rug Doctor machine. The Rug Doctor was more than I wanted to spend, the Bissel machines have the scary "bladder in a tank" design that looks unreliable, and frightening to try and clean. Sure, they have built in heaters, but from what I understand, those are kinda gimmicky anyway. I just use the hottest water I can in the Hoover, and since it goes through water at a scary rate, it doesn't have time to cool before I'm done. I walk behind it, and it feels warm from first drop to last.

I would recommend the MaxExtract 60 as the "sweet spot" -- best balance of price/features on the market today. It's the entry to the MaxExtract lines, and has all of the important features of the more expensive models, without the annoying "bells and whistles" -- higher end models clean bare floors, and have "auto rinse" and a few other doodads, as well as a large price jump. I don't see the need to have a carpet cleaner do anything other than clean carpet. I have a mop for my bare floors, and I like having manual control of my rinse cycle. Overall, I'd recommend this to anyone who asked me which shampooer they should buy.

5Fantastic Carpet Cleaner
By Indiver716
I purchased this carpet cleaner at Target after reading many on-line reviews of many different carpet cleaners. I gathered from all the reviews that carpet cleaners in general seemed to break after a few years if not a few months. I got the impression, however, that Hoover carpet cleaners seemed to be less problematic in general than Bissell carpet cleaners.

I therefore strongly advised that my wife purchase a Hoover carpet cleaner rather than a Bissell carpet cleaner, even though she much preferred the style/design of the Bissells (Hoover could take some pointers from Bissell in the styling area).

I advised the purchase of another Hoover carpet cleaner, but it was not in the store and I liked the description of the features on this one, even though there were zero reviews on this particular model at the time we purchased it. We went ahead and purchased this MaxExtract 60 carpet cleaner.

We have since used the carpet cleaner about 8 times in the 3 months since we purchased it. We have not had our carpets cleaned professionally or otherwise since we purchased our home new 8 years ago. We have 3 kids though no pets. The entire path from our entryway to our kitchen was fairly dark from heavy traffic, even though we make a habit of taking our shoes off. After just a few passes with the carpet cleaner, you could see a significant difference. After a few more passes, the heavy traffic area looked like new from a color perspective though there was some carpet fiber wear and matting that no cleaner will remove. We proceeded to clean the rest of the carpets with less drastic results but overall the carpet looked brand-new again.

We have used the carpet cleaner since the original cleaning multiple times to clean-up from kid messes, including multiple #1 and #2 messes from a potty training child (he's just like an untrained dog, though this one knows how to take his diaper off). On some of the #2 messes we had to use the hand-held attachment (this model does not have a spinning brush on the hand-held attachment; I think the 77 brush model might have the spinning brush feature) and this worked very well.

We have even cleaned up sun-lotion from our trouble-maker son, which we have historically seen long-term staining from; no stains with this carpet cleaner. I'm not seeing a big need for the spinning brush attachment and the 60 brushes that are available seem to work fine; not sure how much better 77 brushes would work but it may not be worth the extra $$

I concur with other reviewers that the carpets are dry in about 2 hours. The carpets are only damp after the cleaning; they are not soaked at all.

The size of the clean and waste water containers seems like a good compromise between cleaning time and effort to push the cleaner. You can run through a round of water pretty quickly (3 rounds for a deep cleaning of a 10X10 room), though the separate soap dispenser seems to last 2-3 water rounds. The size seems pretty good relative to Bissell cleaners and other older Hoover cleaners

Cleaning the cleaner is fairly straight-forward; just pop everything off and rinse it off. In some spots you may need to use a pointed utensil to remove clumps of hair and carpet fibers. You also may need to run your finger along the two metal screen filters to remove any collected carpet fibers and hair. I did not go to the level of removing each individual brush and cleaning it; just ran it under some water and spun the brushes using the male motor attachment; this seemed to work adequately and pooled any hair and carpet fibers in one spot so I could remove it.

I have not seen any issues with dripping or pooling water as I've read with some Bissell cleaners. There is a little dripping when removing the clean and waste water receptacles and I clean the cleaner on linoleum instead of carpet but have not seen any significant issues.

The length of the manual attachment hose is sufficient to allow me to clean stairs all the way up to the first stair landing before I need to carry the entire cleaner up the stairs. This is a lot better than a vacuum we have where the vacuum needs to be carried up each individual stair.

I'm a little worried about how thin the gasket is between the lower and upper parts of the waste water receptacle. Given that the water level does not reach this gasket line before the motor makes the high pitched sound indicating that the water needs to be emptied, however, it hopefully won't be an issue.

The handle on the waste receptacle is touted as a means for carrying the carpet cleaner. I only use this handle to carry the waste receptacle itself; it appears to be a piece added on top of the waste receptacle and I'd be worried it would crack if carrying the entire weight of the carpet cleaner. I use the main handle and put one hand under the bottom of the carpet cleaner to carry it upstairs.

Overall we've been very pleased with this carpet cleaner. I've had good luck with a Hoover vacuum lasting over 7 years thus-far so I'm hopeful the motor on this cleaner will last as long. The attachments on this carpet cleaner seem more sturdy than the ones on our vacuum, though I could see us replacing the hand-held attachment once the brushes wear down.

Update: It's been 2 years since we purchased this carpet cleaner and I continue to see great cleaning results. Nothing has broken so far. We had a number of black spots more recently on our high-traffic section and it took all these out like a champ. My son go ahold of the cap that keeps the clean water in and ended up losing it, so I partially inflate a zip-lock bag and stick it where the cap used to go; that seems to keep the water in fairly well. One of the best purchases we've made; carpets look pretty new other than wear/matted down fibers in spots. We might end up trying to sell our house in 5 years and we might be able to get away without buying new carpets.

4The steam mop SHOW DOWN: Results of steam mop first hand comparisons & studying of comps
By Chandler
(update: This review was updated on 11-2-09 after I got to compare the Bissell as well as add notes about the Ladybugg steamer at the bottom)

I live in a neighborhood where EVERY home is "green built certified" this means that, to have that certification, the builder built no homes with carpet. All the main floors are polished concrete and the upper floors wood. The bathrooms all have tile and/or slate in every home.

Because of this, as you could imagine, steam mops are quite the neccessity...not only because they get the hard surfaces better than anything else, but because they are also "green" and clean chemical free. I'll be honest, for us...that's a bonus but we weren't cleaning chemical free before. We like chemical free for our pet's paws but I'll confess I was mopping with chemicals before I got my steamer and just kept the pets out of the room while doing it because, up until then, I couldn't get it clean any other way.

Okay, so that said...we decided to have a steamer show down to compare 5 different steamers because my friends and I knew as long as we are in these homes we are gonna have to have a steamer to get all these hard floors clean...we may as well figure out which one to buy next go round. Because my own home is graced with 2 cats, 3 dogs, and two gregarious cooks, my kitchen floor (which had not ever been cleaned by a steamer since my steamer had just arrived) was the testing spot.

Mind you, I vaccuum twice per week and do a mega mop twice a week. I THOUGHT I had pretty clean floors in spite of my pet capacity.

I thought wrong. These picked up dirt so well it's scary

So here's the results:

1. steam mops are the mac daddys of clean floors. What these things picked up was tremendous and no comparison to my vigorous prior constant major mopping.

2. So now I'll break down the elements of each mop we used and then go into more detail about each at the end.

We tried out:
"S": The shark by Europro
"E" The Envirosteamer by Eureka
"H" the haan steamer
"M" the Monster
"B" The Bissell Green Tea

CORD LENGTH: so you don't have to stop and unplug and replug in somewhere else:
Shark ( will be referred to as S):20 feet
Envirosteamer (will be referred to as E): 25 feet
Haan: (will be referred to as H)19'8"
Monster (will be referred to as M): 25 feet
Bissell (will be referred to as B) 17 feet

STEAM TEMPERATURE: this is a primary element. The hotter the steam, the more dirt picked up and hot steam will also kill parasites, mold and mildew and loosen more dirt:
S 110 degrees. lame
E 220 degrees. very hot
H 212 degrees. very hot
M 266 degrees. hottest...although the envirosteamer and haan seemed plenty hot enough. The shark didn't clean nearly as well and this was one reason. 110 degrees just isn't going to melt off stuck on grime.
B 125 degrees. Note that, because of this low steam temperature the manual said that if I wanted to sanitize the floor or pick up caked on spills, I had to hold the steamer on the spot for 15 seconds but no more than 20 because that could damage some floors. Now I don't know about you, but if I can sanitize with one swipe of the other steamers because of their sanitizing temps my floor will be done WAY faster but I don't have a timer to worry about the extra 5 secons where my wood floors could get damaged. My sink water is hotter than this so it would take less time to use a regular mop if I have to hold the steamer on every spot of my floor for 15 seconds to santize. Just sayin

BUILD:
We found how it was made corresponded with issues with the steamer. The Shark, for example, was quite flimsy and they actually sell replacement handle kits because so many people have issues with the handle breaking! We know this because my neighbor's shark broke and the store had a replacement handle kit on the shelf because he said "it happens often". That's an extra cost.
Envirosteamer: Was 5.4 lbs which made it lightweight but strong enough that you didn't have to press down to clean. Very well made and strong parts
Haan: not made as well as the envirosteamer but it's more expensive so this was a surprise. A bit flimsy and you need to press down on it more to clean at 3.15 lbs.
Monster: hefty and well made at 9 lbs but a bit too heavy unless you want a good workout. (Note: They have changed the Monster handles on the mops now and they are all plastic and people are having breakage issues)
Bissell: It's 8.4 pounds but that includes a water filter that you have to get for this one (see notes below)

WATER CAPACITY: Very important because having to stop and add more water just adds on to the time you have to spend cleaning, especially if you are cleaning a hallway or livingroom or some other area that has no sink:
S: only holds 10 oz of water. Lasted for 10 miinutes of cleaning
E: holds 20 oz. of water. Lasted for over 20 minutes of cleaning (we stopped at 20 and it was still going)
H: holds 11.83 oz of water. Lasted for 13 minutes of cleaning
M: holds 17 oz. of water. Lasted for 15 minutes of cleaning
B: holds 13 oz of water, lasted for 12.5 minutes of cleaning AND you have to undo and remove the tank from the machine every time you fill it up then hook it back on and the steam tank is on the handle rather than the base so the steam doesn't flow directly out after heating up which may explain why it's not as hot once it leaves the machine. The way this mop is made the water flows past heating elements which can, according to Bissell, develop calcium deposits on it so this is the only mop where, because of this, you also have to use a water filter with it and replace the water filter when there is build up which means and extra 12 bucks every few months. The better mops are made to heat the water in a metal tank so this is not an issue and you pour the water directly into the tank.

STEAM HOLES: We found a difference although you'd think they'd all be the same. The shark only had one hole that the steam came out of so it wasn't cleaning things on the edges, just in one spot. All the others had steam coming from bottom and sides.

SIZE: The taller it is the less stooping, the wider the mop head, the more it covers
S: 40"Hx12"Wx7"D
E: 50"Hx13.25"Wx6.75"D (the fact that this depth was smaller made it reach under applicances better...it fit better under things)
H: 50.5x11.5x7.5
M: 48x12.7.5
B: 45.25H (this was uncomfortably short) x11 x8.4 (even though this didn't fit under cabinets because of the depth it did swivel the best)

Conclusion of comparison: First it must be pointed out that, in order to use the shark and the Bissell, you had to keep pumping the water. This was the most annoying feature of anything...the others just steamed on their own and didn't wear out your fingers. Hated this feature of the shark and Bissell. We liked that the Monster and the Shark and Envirosteamer and the Bissell came with 2 cleaning pads rather than one. The Haan only came with one at the time of the review (I double checked since when she bought hers it was also only one and as of today, that hasn't changed) so that ups the price even more because I can't imagine only wanting one to clean. All worked well on sanitizing mattresses and showers. too.

But the winner picked by all of us unanimously as the mop we want to have for our next steam mop order?
The Eureka Envirosteamer. It picked up the most dirt, was made as well as the Monster but was less expensive, held the most water, emitted the most very hot steam so it sanitized as well, lasted 3 times as long with one water resevor fillup as the others, and had a cord as long as the monster. BUT if you have carpets than I would recommend the Monster because it has a carpet attachment that allows you to steam clean your carpets and it picked up pretty close to the same amount of dirt as the Eureka Envirosteamer, and had close to the same features...a bit heavier though but that may make it last even longer. It is costlier, but to clean 2 surfaces I would think that might make it worth it.

UPDATE: The Haan just started including 2 pads with the mop according to the product description page. Not that this changes our opinion since it didn't work as well and the parts were flimsier, but it should be noted that this issue of not having enough cleaning pads has now been resolved and is equal to the other mops.

ANOTHER UPDATE: 1. The Shark came out with a new machine that holds more water and has a longer cord BUT it still only heats the water to 110 degrees so it won't sanitize or get rid of trapped grime at this "bathwater" temperature.

Another update: I haven't tried it yet but was told about an even better mop than the Eureka Envirosteamer but I can't personally afford it...still, it's worth mentioning in case you can. It's called the Ladybug XL2300 and is a canister steam mop. It heats the water to 298 degrees (woah!) so it's a super sanitizer but it's over a thousand bucks. It also comes with 6 towels. I didn't include it in my review because I haven't ever tried it and I wanted to only include mops I personally tried but it's got great enough stats that, even though it's out of my price range, I thought I'd pass it on as a super sanitizer when I read about it.

Also: Don't spend money buying extra pads for the Eureka. I was in a pinch and used a kitchen dish towel...the rectangular kind...just clip on both ends. It worked just as good or better...because they are thinner so the steam penetrates faster and therefore reaches the floor hotter. However, I would recommend still only using the thick pads that come with it for your wood floors just to be safe. But the super hot steam penetrating the dish towel worked excellent on tile and hard floors. Also, you can flip both the towel and the pads that come with it on the Eureka to double the usage...when it gets dirty, just flip it over and use the other side. I use several old dish towels with this but I like best the kind that just have a bit of texture but no squares sewn on them...but they all work great. So do the pads.

5A Monster Cleaner
By W. Williams
This little cleaner is awesome!! And I mean awesome! I only use it on tile, so keep that in mind, but it does a WONDERFUL job. The steam powerfully removes dirt and dried on stuff. I was so impressed the first time I used it and that feeling continues. There's very little "scrubbing" involved, just pushing - and that's not too hard, though a little harder than a regular mop. The beauty is that you don't feel like you're pushing dirt around the floor like you do with a regular mop. It really seems to come up and stick to the microfiber cloth (I always vacuum before mopping too). I even did a paper towel test on a section of tile that I'd mopped with the Monster - no dirt on the paper towel. Now that's impressive. It does take about 5 minutes to heat up when filled with cold water, the handle is a little flimsy for my taste, and yes, it doesn't reach all the way under cabinets because of the way it's designed, but the cleaning power outweighs any of these issues. Hope this helps someone make a great decision. A clean floor with little effort and no choking chemicals. You can't beat that.
