A bigger steam press has its downsides too

I bought this because it is the biggest consumer class steam press I could find, and it also has a decent status display screen.

Pros:
-It presses, as expected.
-It provides a larger area surface area than other smaller models - this much is obvious. The large area is indeed useful at times.
-It has a decent status display screen which shows the current temperature in degrees Fahrenheit at all times.

Cons:
-Being so big, it can take a really long time to heat up. In the wall socket where I plugged it, it was using about 1314 watts or VA of electricity - maybe this is the most that my wall socket could provide; I don't know. It took about 15 minutes to heat up from 68F to 392F - this is the recommended temperature at which to press cotton. Well the press will show E2 (presumably error #2) after 15 minutes of being idle, and it will then shut off, although you can press any button to reset the timer if you know that this is about to happen. I recommend pressing thinner cotton at a lower temperature setting to avoid risking damage to the cloth.
-As you continue to press, it is really impractical to maintain the desired 392F temperature (for cotton). I was typically able to keep it between 300F and 350F. I kept it at a minimum of 300F at all times, because that is the threshold at which "steam" becomes available.
-The steam output holes are not distributed throughout the heating surface. There are two large rectangular areas in the center that have no holes. The edges don't have any holes either. Nevertheless, because the steam is a gas, it spreads, and so it seems to be fine. The included water sprayer can be occasionally useful as well.
-There is no way to remove the water tray to allow emptying it, should I want to do this before transporting the press. Essentially I had to tilt the press and use lots of paper napkins to soak the leftover water inside the tray.

Comments:
-Be sure to wear gloves at all times when pressing with a steam press, or you'll definitely burn your hands many times. Especially thick or protective gloves are _not_ necessary.
-Ensure your wall power outlet can provide the necessary amount of power.
-Use distilled water in the press.
-Note: the screen shows E1 (presumably error #1) if you hold down the press for too long. Following this, if you don't immediately raise the press, it'll shut down.
-Using this obviously increases the surrounding room temperature, and so I had to drink about a liter of water per usage hour to keep up.

You Dont Always Get What You Pay For

I'd been sending my shirts out because I like the quality of the dry-cleaned look. Shocked at how rapidly dry-cleaning reduced the life of my shirts, my expectation of the S550 was a device that would produce dry-clean quality pressing in a fraction of the time of pressing with a hand-held steam iron.

Short version of things is that even as I became proficient at using the S550, it was still taking me 7-minutes to press a shirt completely; same as a hand-held (but better quality results), but still too long for me. I already had an upright garment steamer; what I didn't like about it was the poor results on cuffs, collars and the button-hole strips. So I now use the S550 for pressing cuffs, collars and the button-hole strips and the upright steamer for the rest of the shirt; this way, I can complete a shirt in 3 - 4 minutes. To be fair, upon closer look, dry clean shops use one press for the large shirt panels, a separate press for sleeves and collars and often hand-press the yolks/shoulders.

Putting aside my failed expectations of the S550, as the machine alone goes, it appears to be of high-quality for a consumer-grade steam press. Specifically:
* it heats up to 400° in about 20 minutes
* Delivers well-distributed steam
* The digital panel is easy to use

What could be better:
* The steamer plate (top) only opens 45° making it difficult to handle a garment without burning your hand. I wish it opened 90°.
* Also because of this, it makes positioning the garment very difficult. This is why it takes so long to press a shirt.

Would I recommend this press? It depends on your needs. In hind-sight, just for pressing cuffs, sleeves, and button-hole strips I would still buy a steam press, but I would buy the smallest, cheapest one I could find.

skeptical but not dissapointed

I used to own a Singer press many years ago and I liked it but always wished it had a steam feature and a larger plate. It worked fine but I eventually got rid of it. I regreted that decision recently when I started taking my work clothes and my husband's uniforms to the cleaners and the prices are just outrageous. I started looking into a new purchase and saw this one. I was very impressed by their video and it had the features I always wanted. Then I started reading the reviews for this one and for other similar models and they were not always the best. After much research I decided to get this one. Especially because I started noticing that some of the poor reviews had more to do with user error than with a faulty item. I ordered it and got it two days later. I opened the box and straight out of the box it doesn't need any major preparation. I placed it on the island of my kitchen and noticed there were some water stains on the outside of the water reservoir. I was a little confused because it looked like new and I made sure I order a new item not an used one. I filled with water and turned it on. It was at the highest temp. in about 15 minutes. When I started to use to press some pants and pressed the steam button it made the most horrible screaching sound, then I got really worried. I continued to use and it got better but I was still worried about it. I contacted Amazon the next day and reported that maybe it was used. They were very helpful and offered to exchange it for another one or do a refund. I decided I will try another one. Then I got to thinking about the hassle of repacking it and all. I then thought to contact the manufacturer and ask how does this operate and what is normal about it and what is not. The gentleman I spoke with was very professional and very helpful. He told me that whenever they sell a used item the box is marked as used. I asked him about the water stains and he said that they randomly pull out some from the line to test them to make sure they work properly and that very likely mine was one that was tested. I asked him about the screaching sound and he told me that these machines have a pump mechanism that make a sound when you press the steam button. He said the screaching sound was probably air that was still in the line and was being released. He reassured me of their warranty and told me that if I should have any other concerns to contact him directly. I also asked him about why so many people seem to have problems with these in general and he told me that many times these are purchased by small hotels and bed and breafast places and that they want to leave them on all day but these are not for commercial use and cannot withstand being on all day every day because they are not built for that. I can see how that makes sense. Okay moving on: I decided not to return it. I have owned it now for a little over 2 months. It works wonderful. The water reservoir is big and I have not ever ran out of water, I have stored it with water in it and not a drop has spilled while in storage. It gets very, very hot. I burned myself first time I used it. I got me some cotton gloves and I'm going to get me some tennis cuffs to protect my wrists because that is where I got burned. True, there is not a lot of clearance between the top and bottom but the Singer one I used to own was the same way. I also suspect is built this way to keep it from tipping over? Maybe. You have to learn how to use it like anything else. The temperature fluctuates a little but not much. The steam is excellent. It clearly tells you on the instructions not to press the steam button for more that 5 seconds and to not use it while the machine is fully closed to prevent damage. I suspect this is how many people damage their's and then claim the machine is faulty. I use it mostly for pants because I find it a little difficult to do button down shirts, and dresses, maybe with practice and patience I can master it, but I find myself in a rush most times to spend too much time trying. I definetely know this is not going to replace my regular iron or my garment steamer but for my purposes it works. It covers nearly a whole pant leg. Just make sure they are not bunched up at the bottom pretty much the way you do when you use the regular iron. This is a good machine, it is heavy, feels well built and it does what is supposed to do. Do I get perfect results? not yet-but not because the machine is faulty but rather because I need to learn how to use it. The results I do get are comparable to my cleaners and I'm sure could be even better with practice. It takes wrinkles out of stuff I never thought the wrinkles would ever come out of, like some stubborn cottons and some linens. I also use the spray bottle to facilitate the process. As of today I'm very pleased with this purchase, cannot speak about longevity since I haven't owned long enough. Should something change I will update my review to reflect it but for now I think it is an excellent product.
