Beats anything under this price range

About me: I have had a few cats over the years and recently one of them who has now passed away was over 19 years old, had kidney disease and started urinating anywhere an everywhere throughout the home where she pleased. Also, I have a mobile automotive detailing business which I also use this unit for.

First, let me start out by saying I've been through two non commercial use Hoover carpet cleaners and one bissel. On the bissel, the Jose broke on the second use and leaked everywhere. (the hoses were really stiff), it was a waste of 180.00. I returned it and turned to Hoover, the first of the two was a max extract model, after a couple of uses it got stuck in the spray position, soaking my carpeting beyond belief and I had to go over the entire carpet with my wet/dry shop vac. I returned it for a lesser expensive model Hoover and it did the same thing in my bedroom. I returned it and vowed to myself never to buy a Hoover or bissel again.

Finally, I purchased this unit. I have used it in my living room, bedroom, stairs, and it has even now become my primary automotive shamooer/extractor. Both the unit and upholstery tool feel much more commercial grade than any of the other units I've had. It's made of plastic but a much more durable plastic than the other machines I've owned. It has excellent suction when compared to the other units. Therefore, it leaves much less dampness on the cleaned surfaces thus promoting a faster dry time then comparable extractors. I even went over some carpeting that I could still smell cat urine on after cleaning it twice before with the Hoover machines and I couldn't believe how well it performed and how much junk it removed.

As far as cleaning solution is concerned, I always use either folex brand carpet cleaner or zep commercial low foaming solution in the gallon containers. They work better than the small/high cost bottles (they are sold by the gallon at home depot or here on amazon). You do not have to use the manufacturers brand but I would suggest low foaming. All the manufacturer is trying to do in my opinion is bully you into their product so they receive more profit. Like they'll know anyway. The folex has no odor therefor doesn't leave behind that strong irritating "wow, the carpets were just cleaned, Odor".

I would recommend following up any cleaning with taking the machine over it once more with just plain hot water to remove any extra soap residue. Thats what a good professional would do anyway. Soap attracts dirt, try to remove as much of it as possible. I don't understand the water only solution PRIOR to soaping... Just sounds like more work and a wetter floor to me.

Hope this helps you all out... For the durability and improved performance alone it is well worth the extra price to pay. The only cons are as followed:

No water heater
It is a little on the tipsy top heavy side but nothing severe.

A pleasant surprise for a 4 dog family

We have 4 large dogs and a large wooded back yard, needless to say our carpets can look hideous at times. Having someone come in to do clean our carpets is just not workable, it would create to much chaos. We had a standard Hoover Steam cleaner for years, but it was a loosing battle. This is the type of job that requires a tough machine, so we decided to bite the bullet and go big and get the Rug Doctor.

I can't say how surprised we were from the very first cleaning line we did....we felt like we were in the commercial, it worked wonders! What used to take me an entire day to clean took me only 2 1/2 hours and it left no more of a damp footprint than our Hover did.

The machine itself is basic, no more now less - no fancy bells or whistles, but for a serious job this is the machine for us. The only downside is it doesn't come with the hose for tight corners that's extra - of course.

Great appliance, comparable to commercial grade products

PROS:
-Powerful, fight stains with easy. (deep-down stains may requires some hand scrub)
-Huge, 3 gallon tank, with super long power cord. Move from room to room with no problem.
-Priceless if having pets.
-5 year warranty, will beat any cheap oreck or hoover.

CONS:
- It consume water quickly if you move slowly (my carpet was so dirty).
- It's kind of pricey but I knew the cost would pay for its self in no time compare to rental savings.
Besides that, can't find any negatives to this carpet steamer.
